Capital District Kiwanis Foundation Trustee Ken Smith presents $3,000 check to Angel Cavanaugh and Ryan Lightener of the UVA Children's Hospital. Past Kiwanis Charlottesville President Jim Hart was happy to attend the ceremony. Since 1998, the Capital District Foundation has donated over $90,000 to the UVA Children's Hospital, one of eight Level 1 Trauma Hospitals serving the Capital District. Kiwanis Charlottesville has sponsored its first Aktion Club, a unique service leadership program for adults with disabilities. The Jefferson Area Aktion Club held its organizational meeting on August 29 and announced its mission statement: "to provide adults living with disabilities an opportunity to develop initiative, leadership skills, and to serve their communities. " Its vision is "to develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service." Its motto: "Where development has no disability." A dozen hardy Kiwanians came out to volunteer for the August "Dick Fowler Memorial Service Work Night" at Camp Holiday Trails, a summer camp for children with special health needs and autism.
