Kiwanis, Key Club, and CKI Volunteers Shine at Hospice of the Piedmont - 10/30/2017

Two dozen volunteers from Kiwanis Charlottesville, Charlottesville High School Key Club, Albemarle High School Key Club, and Circle K International (CKI) at UVA came together to accomplish no fewer than (count 'em) nine projects in a two-hour service work night session at Hospice of the Piedmont.  Envelopes were stuffed, brochures folded, tea lights tested, syringes assembled, address labels affixed, dining booklets sorted and stacked, and on and on until the Kiwanis dinner bell rang and volunteers enjoyed the fellowship of a Tex/Mex fiesta complete with home-made brownies and cookies for dessert.  Advancement Officer, Jackie Gamache, read a letter of thanks from...


"KIWANIS ONE DAY" Returns to Salvation Army - 10/28/2017

Kiwanis "tree surgeons" from left, Eric Lamb, Bob Pflugfelder, and Don Foss,  spruce up the grounds at The Salvation Army Family Store's Donation Center during the annual  KIWANIS ONE DAY event on Saturday, October 28.  Ten Kiwanians, three Albemarle Key Clubbers, and fifteen volunteers from UVA service fraternity, APO, came together to help The Salvation Army conduct a fun Fall Festival in the gym on Ridge Street as well as do some groundskeeping and sorting at the Donation Center on Cherry Avenue from 10 until 2.  See photos of this annual multigenerational service event by clicking on this link http://kiwaniscville.org/Page/30195

Kiwanis Family Helps YMCA Get Ready For Haunted Open House - 10/23/2017

More than thirty Kiwanis-Family members came together to make short work decorating the YMCA Child Care Center for their annual Haunted Open House Halloween Party  at the Jefferson School City Center location at the October  "Dick Fowler Memorial Service Work Night."   Kiwanians Cindy Harris and Judy Faust (with spooky bats overhead) review the list of tasks to accomplish.  Fifteen Kiwanis volunteers worked alongside six CKI members from UVA, seven Albemarle Key Clubbers, and two Charlottesville Key Clubbers to blow up balloons, decorate the walls and halls, and ceilings and floors, and windows and doors, all under the direction of YMCA Child...


Cozy Comforts at People Places - 09/21/2017

During their Thursday luncheon meeting on September 21, Kiwanians delivered fifteen uniquely designed and individually packed "Cozy Comforts" backpacks to the staff at People Places to be presented to chlldren as they transition into foster care families in the upcoming weeks and months.   Project co-chairs Heather Mott and Barb Ritter explained that the backpacks contain essentials such as a stuffed animal, a handmade blanket, a nightlight, books, and personal care items in order to give each child a sense of comfort as well as providing them with some of their first possessions they can call their own.  Brad Wentz, Regional Director in...


Capital District Kiwanis Foundation Supports UVA Children's Hospital - 09/05/2017

Capital District Kiwanis Foundation Trustee Ken Smith presents $3,000 check to Angel Cavanaugh and Ryan Lightener of the UVA Children's Hospital. Past Kiwanis Charlottesville President Jim Hart was happy to attend the ceremony. Jefferson Area Aktion Club Holds Organizational Meeting - 08/29/2017

Kiwanis Charlottesville has sponsored its first Aktion Club, a unique service leadership program for adults with disabilities.  The Jefferson Area Aktion Club held its organizational meeting on August 29 and announced its mission statement:  "to provide adults living with disabilities an opportunity to develop initiative, leadership skills, and to serve their communities. "  Its vision is "to develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service." Service Work Night at Camp Holiday Trails - 08/28/2017

A dozen hardy Kiwanians came out to volunteer for the August "Dick Fowler Memorial Service Work  Night" at Camp Holiday Trails, a summer camp for children with special health needs and autism. Kiwanis Volunteers at Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry - 07/31/2017

34th Running of the Kiwanis Independence Day 5K Race - 07/04/2017

Refreshingly clear skies greeted 233 runners and more than 25 Kiwanis volunteers early Tuesday morning at the 34th Annual Kiwanis Independence Day 5K Race.  Smiles were shared at the registration tables and preparations were completed at Sutherland Middle School so that a record $7,500 could be raised in support of Camp Holiday Trails, a summer camp for kids with special health needs.
